Kid Stuff - Comments on the History of Children's Literature

By Lindsey Williams It appears that the "Tom Swift" and "Wizard of Oz" books - popular with kids for most of the last century - are finally to be replaced by "Harry Potter." The fourth volume of the Harry Potter series went on sale at bookstores throughout the country during midnight parties -- excitement not seen since the Pet Rock craze a decade ago. Titled "The Goblet of Fire," the latest book by British author J.K. (Joanne Kathleen) Rowling promises - or threatens -- to prolong indefinitely the Potter series for the generation coming on line. Some parents are uneasy about the new sub-literary fad. It features a supernatural kid who hobnobs with sorcerers and witches. Hey, they're reading instead of watching the same stuff on teevee. All kids go through the make-believe stage, and some of us never outgrow it. Ms. Rowling insists she makes up her stories simply to entertain children and make a living for herself and daughter. However, deep thinkers profess to see hidden allegories in her works that criticize the political and social life of our times. Her emphasis on wishful events seems to bear out contemporary yearning for magic solutions conjured by 12-year-old Harry Potter to deal with his travails. Whatever. The technique is rooted in ancient literature such as "Aesop's Fables" and "Mother Goose Rhymes." More than 600 fables related by a Greek slave in 550 B.C. was intended to impress social verities on children through talking animals. As an 11-year-old, I discovered Aesop's wisdom in a library book. I have never forgotten his account of the hunt by a lion, fox, jackal and wolf. The four hunters brought down a stag and then discussed how to divide it. "Quarter this stag," roared the lion. Accordingly, the other hunters skinned it and cut the meat into four equal parts. With this, the lion pronounced judgment: "The first quarter is for me in my capacity as King of Beasts. The second is mine as arbiter, and another share comes to me for my part in the chase. As for the fourth quarter, I should like to see which of you will dare to try and take it from me," growled the Lion. "Humph," grumbled the Fox as walked away with his tail between his legs, "You may share labors of the great, but you will not share the rewards." Still, today, I shake my head a little when someone ascribes the largest share of anything as that due the lion. The lion's portion, stated ironically by Aesop, is not a share at all, but everything. This fable is a realistic lesson to be learned at an early age. It describes both social and political greed to guard against throughout life. * * * The same dual purpose inspired the hundreds of Mother Goose rhymes. In medieval England, criticism of kings, nobles and other authorities could cost your life. Consequently, jibes at government were couched as ditties for children. Consider this rhyme: Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall. Humpty Dumpty had a great fall. All the king's horses, And all the king's men, Couldn't put Humpty together again. The term humpty-dumpty was commonly used in England to describe someone stupid or muddle-headed. In the rhyme it refers to King Richard III at the battle of Bosworth Field in 1485. Richard was resisting a rebellion by Henry Tudor. In the battle, King Richard fell from his war-horse named Wall. He was surrounded by enemy soldiers and hacked to pieces. He was the last of the York kings and the last king to die on a battlefield. Books For Kids After the American Civil War, the invention of cheap "sulfited" paper pulp sparked a revolution in publishing. Newspapers expanded. "Dime novels" became popular. Public schools were extended to the high-school level. Children had knowledge and desire to read for pleasure. The old custom of veiling politics with kid-appeal was an easy approach for publishers and writers. Regular patrons of this column may remember the recent account of Joel Chandler's "Uncle Remus" series. Those charming tales of talking animals by an editorial writer for the Atlanta Constitution were aimed at "children of all ages." The objective was to entertain - while portraying former slaves as wise and dutiful citizens. An outstanding example of hiding a social message within a fairy tale is the "Wonderful Wizard of Oz" published in 1900. The author was Lyman Frank Baum, editor of the weekly newspaper at Aberdeen, South Dakota. When it failed in 1891 during the prolonged collapse of crop prices he moved his family to Chicago. There he wrote for various newspapers. He also participated actively in the Populist (Silver Coinage) Movement and the presidential campaigns of Sen. William Jennings Bryan. He also wrote his first book "Mother Goose In Prose" in 1897. Interestingly he employed the fantasy/reality techniques of Aesop Fables, Mother Goose, and Lewis Carroll's "Alice In Wonderland" which preceded him. Baum's first venture into fantasy was not widely circulated but reviewed favorably enough to encourage him to write his first Oz book. It was an instant bestseller, which he turned into a theatrical play the following year. His ambition was to act and write for the theater. Nevertheless, the response to "Wonderful Wizard" was so great he consented to write a sequel titled "The Marvelous Land of Oz." Before he died in 1919, Baum wrote 14 Oz books. Thereafter, Ruth Plumly Thompson and other ghostwriters authored 26 additional volumes until the series was concluded in 1963. Baum stoutly maintained that the original Oz had no sociopolitical inferences. Yet, the story and its characters so ably reflected the turbulent times that the comparison is compelling. Oz is the abbreviation for ounce, the standard measure for gold. The yellow brick road is composed of gold ingots that lead only to a field of opium poppies and drugged sleep. The Emerald City is the store of "green-back" paper money backed by silver as well as gold. The Tin Woodman, represents the industrial worker made heartless by factory owners and left to rust when his labor was no longer needed. The Scarecrow is the farmer with not enough brains to support Sen. Bryan's reforms. The Cowardly Lion is Sen. Bryan who roars a lot but is afraid to bite. The Wicked Witch of the East represents New York City financiers and bankers who enslave little people called Munchkins. The Good Witch of the West portrays people in the heartland of America. The Wizard is supposed to be President William McKinley who conceals his deceptions with smoke, mirrors and phony proclamations. Dorothy's magical silver shoes (changed to red in the ever-popular color movie) had the power to grant her wish to go home once she acknowledged the value of family and farm. If Baum did not intentionally weave these symbols into his first Oz book, he subconsciously reflected his time and place - after all, the genius of good writing. * * * My favorite books as a youngster were those in the "Tom Swift" series which began in 1910 and continue popular today. There was not a speck of politics in them, but they were progenitor of science fiction. Tom, "the boy inventor," built contraptions that were just in the discovery stage at the turn of the century. In several instances, the authors of Tom Swift books anticipated science. Such subject matter reflected the fascination of kids - particularly boys - with the gee-whiz technology of that time. Then it was such things as motorcycles, speedboats, automobiles, planes, submarines, radios, and super cannons. These things are ordinary today. Kids now are titillated by witches, giants, monsters, demons, magicians, terminating-killers, space ships and assorted planetary aliens. All are served up by computer games, videos, television and special effect movies. The genre of series books for children -- with the same, central character -- was the brainchild of a publisher named Edward Stratemeyer. He started the Stratemeyer Syndicate of ghostwriters to churn out endless books about characters and situations he dreamed up. Among his creations was the Bobbsey Twins, Hardy Boys, and Nancy Drew. The big money maker, though, was Tom Swift. Most of the first 38 volumes were written by Howard Garis, Stratemeyer's best friend, under the pseudonym Victor Appleton. The books have come to be known as the Tom Swift Senior series. Since then, other publishers bought the name rights. They continued to produce Swift Junior books with ghost writers and adventure topics until "Death Quake," the last one, in 1993. The 99 Tom Swift series is the largest total, and longest running, of all time simply because it tapped the interest of kids in exciting things which might be. Ms. Rowling is simply following a well-tested format. I wish I had thought of it. The Wedding Guest's Guide to A Stress Free and Fun Wedding

By Jane Arnold Most brides become obsessed with throwing the perfect wedding. The bride-zilla persona takes over and can cause incredible pressure and strain on all involved. What most brides fail to realize is that the majority of details they fuss over, go unnoticed by guests and are forgotten by the bride and groom during the excitement of the big day. Over the past five months I have attended six weddings, and in the past three years nearly twenty. My husband and I are in our early 30's, and wedding bells have been ringing simultaneously for all of our friends. My own wedding was well orgainzed but also incredibly fun and stress-free. I went swimming in the ocean the day of the wedding, and except for a few details only we noticed, the event went off without a hitch. Five years later, we still have guests commenting on how much fun they had, and how relaxed everything was. Almost all of the weddings weve attended reflected the personality of the couple getting married, with simple details that made an impact. However, a few were extremely inconvenient for guests and a nightmare for the bride and groom. To avoid the last scenario, here are a few tips to streamline the planning process, reduce cost, stress, and hopefully provide some ideas for memorable wedding. 1. Size Matters: Keep the guest list as small as possible. Editing the guest list will most likely cause the most headaches of the entire wedding process. The size of the wedding will affect everything from overall cost to how much time you get to spend with friends and family. Between 100 and 150 is a reasonable and manageable number, but Ive been to weddings much smaller and they were lovely. A 300 or 400 person wedding is more like a convention and will be outrageously expensive. Make some tough decisions, and remember you dont have to invite every cousin or allow guests to bring dates just to pair them up. The size of the wedding party can also elevate stress levels. I had one bridesmaid and my husband had two groomsmen. A large wedding party can increase costs, personal conflicts, and make the wedding seem cumbersome. Unless you have a great wedding coordinator, keep the number small to avoid clothing issues, wedding day logistics and multiple thank-you gifts. 2. Location, Location, Location: A convenient and beautiful location will be remembered and appreciated by guests. Access to good, reasonably priced accommodation is key. I have been to a few weddings at boat clubs and they were wonderful. Its nice for guests to have an outside option if the weather is hot. A nice deck overlooking water cant be beat. One wedding I attended even had an old fashioned trolley car take us from the chapel to the reception, which I thought was a great touch. The location of the toilets is also something to consider. With all those toasts, a bathroom should be handy. Convenience is what a wedding guest remembers, and the more bathrooms the better. Stock each bathroom with a few essentials like: gum, floss, hairspray, mints, small sewing kit and toothpicks. Its a small gesture that people notice and appreciate. 3. Eat, Drink and Be Married: You must feed and water your guests. There is no way around this. However, depending on the time of day, it can be done inexpensively but with class. An afternoon wedding can lend itself to cocktails and appetizers or a basic buffet can be great. A buffet allows guests to move around and there seems to be more room for negotiating a price. Make sure that fresh, quality ingredients are used no matter what the meal style. Do not have a large gap between the ceremony and dinner. If you plan to take photographs, have a cocktail hour for your guests. No need for a lot of food, but a simple and elegant cheese tray with fresh fruit and crackers will do. A friend of mine also had a bowl of chocolate truffles for guests to snack on. Always provide a non-alcoholic option for guests. A wedding I recently attended had a wonderful bright yellow old-fashioned lemonade dispenser surrounded by exquisite glasses. A great treat on a hot day. Also, best to start speeches during the meal. No one likes to be trapped after eating and spend the next hour or two listening to long and sometimes bad speeches. No one remembers speeches, but they remember being kept hostage at the table. Also, under no circumstances do you open the mike up to the room. Ive seen what can happen and its not pretty. If possible, choose an organized and funny MC. This can take so much pressure off the bride and groom and really sets the mood for the rest of the evening. 4. The Devil is in the Details: All of the extras such as the cake, flowers, decorations, music, and guest favors can break the bank and create a lot of work for the bride. You need to simplify in this area because most of these details are not remembered and sometimes add little to the wedding. For my wedding I actually did away with a wedding cake, garter and flower toss. I don't regret it but if you choose to stick with tradition, use flowers judiciously and opt for a very simple but beautiful cake. Centerpieces can be one flower or candles and lanterns, use your imagination. Fewer flowers and decorations can reduce cost, transportation issues and wedding day set-up time. If you have dancing, make sure you hire a great band that understands the audience demographics, or a DJ that will play requests. I had a wonderful DJ that actually referred to himself as a 'dance motivator', and he wasn't exaggerating. Two months ago I attended a wedding where the bride personally made her own favors. Individual cakes, thank you cards, and place markers for each place setting. At the end of the night, most of these were left on the tables and no one really understood the amount of work she put into them. One of the nicest weddings I attended simply had box of high end chocolates per couple and I thought that was great. Personally made CDs made nice parting gifts too, but take much more work. Guests only require something little as a thank-you, as they will receive a note from you later on. 5. Memories: I think this is an area where couples make the biggest mistake. Skimping on a professional photographer should never be done. I can say this from experience. We had a family friend take photos and they just didnt turn out. I cant stress enough that you will be happy about this investment, and a videographer isn't a bad idea either. Having a professional in this role will give you piece of mind and they will make sure that Aunt Minnie wasn't left out, saving explanations down the road. Just be sure to meet with the photographer to let them know what style you're thinking of. In closing, pick and choose your battles. Sometimes it's better to save feelings and relationships than have a particular color or food. Know what you want and let all the other distractions fade away. Use these tips as a guide and your wedding can be fun, stress free, and memorable. Jane Arnold is a freelance writer and part-time wedding guest. Replacing Alcohol in Cooking

By Andrew Hall You'll have to use your own judgement on substituting for alcohol in recipes. Sweet recipes will require different substitutions than savory. Amounts will also make a difference. You wouldn't want to use a quarter cup of almond extract to replace the same amount of Amaretto liqueur. And remember, the final product will not be how the original cook intended, but it should still be tasty. Look at the main ingredients of your recipe. Usually the main liquid ingredient can be extended to cover a small amount of required alcoholic ingredient. If the amount is less than a tablespoon, it can probably be omitted although flavor will be lost. Any variety of juices and/or tomato juice can often be substituted in marinades. Non-alcoholic wine or wine vinegar can be substituted for wine. Add a bit of honey or sugar to emulate sweeter wines. Extracts, flavorings, syrups, and juices can be substituted for flavor-based liquors and liqueurs. They will usually need to be diluted. Use non-alcoholic wines over cooking wine or sherry. It should be drinkable. The cooking wines and sherries are loaded with sodium which detracts from flavor and adds a salty flavor to the food. To help burn off more alcohol and reduce potential injuries when using it for flamed dishes, be sure to warm the liquor before adding to the hot (the food must also be hot!), and use a long match or lighter to ignite it. Always tilt the pan away from you when igniting. The liquor should be added very last possible moment and lit as quickly as possible to avoid the liquor soaking into the food. Let the alcohol burn off enough so the flavor does not overpower the dish. Tomato sauce or juice combined with Worcestershire sauce or soy sauce can work as a substitute for many robust liquors. Frozen desserts and high alcohol-content liquor do not mix well since the alcohol freezes at a much lower temperature. You may end up with runny ice cream or sorbet. When using milk or cream in a sauce containing alcohol, be sure to burn off the alcohol before adding the cream or the sauce may curdle. If the alcoholic ingredient in the recipe is intended to be the main flavor and you must avoid alcohol, find another recipe. It just won't taste the same. Protect Your Home as Well as Your Family

By T. R. Walton How secure is your home? How accessible is your home? How Often do you ask yourself these questions. Your home is where you and
your family want to be safe from the daily stresses of life and
most definitely from crime. A burglary happens every 15 seconds
in this country. Though many intrusions are non confrontational
have you ever asked yourself what if I or my family were home
during a burglary? Most Burglaries happen during daytime hours
because this is the time many of us are working, going to
school, etc. The typical burglar is looking for anything of
value. Rape and/or sexual assault after a break-in happens
almost regularly during the summer months when windows and doors
are left open and unlocked. If you try to think like a burglar
for a minute the first step in planning a break-in would be to
figure out when the home owners are not home. You would watch
the daily routine of the homes occupants. The next step would be
to figure out how difficult gaining entry to the house would be. A couple of things come to mind here; Locked doors and windows,
alarm systems, and even surveillance cameras now. Burglars are
going to enter your home by either walking right thru an
unlocked door or open window, using tools to break in or unlock
the existing locks, or simply using force to gain entry so lets
look the first steps in preventing a burglary. Door an window
locks are the homes initial barrier to be overcome by an
intruder. Typically the garage and rear doors of the house are
the weekest entry points as well as first floor windows on the
sides and rear of the home. These areas may also provide cover
for the burglar. You will want to make sure your locks make it
very difficult to gain entry. Use a solid core or metal door for
all entry areas, Use a quality, heavy-duty, deadbolt lock with a
one-inch throw bolt Use a quality, heavy-duty, knob-in-lock set
with a dead-latch mechanism Use a heavy-duty strike plate with
3-inch screws to penetrate into a wooden door frame, use
multiple locks for your doors as well. Sliding glass doors have
blocking bars that can be inserted in the track to prevent the
door from sliding open. You can use pins that slide thru the
track as well to prevent sliding or lifting of the door. Windows
are often left open during the summer months. Blocking devices
are neccessary to keep the window from opening further. A window
should not be left open more than six inches or enough to allow
a burglar to reach in and unlock or remove blocking device. If an intruder makes it into your home via door, broken window,
etc. we suggest the next step of arming your home via an alarm
system that is monitored and dispatched to police upon an alarm
or simply by having detection and sound alarm devices to not
only scare off an intruder but also warn anyone who may be home
at the time. Devices such as Door and window sound alarms,
motion alarms, vibration alarms, etc. Alarm yard signs and
window decals are also a great deterrent as well as the lighting
in and around your home. We suggest using floodlights with
motion sensors around the exterior of your home and timers that
your lights and appliances plug into and will come on
automatically simulating people are home. You may purchase
surveillance cameras to help further deter and/or monitor your
homes activities when you are not there. These images can be
viewed and recorded onto time lapse recorders or your PC with
proper software. You can even watch your home while on vacation
thru your laptop computer. These are the basic steps in in
preventing home burglary as well as protecting your family. For

If You Want to Lose Weight, Stop Dieting!

By Sue Roberts Lose weight without dieting...how is that possible? It seems like a contradiction, doesn't it? If you have tried unsuccessfully to lose weight in the past, chances are you tried a special diet. And you probably lost weight. The important question of course being, did you keep it off permanently? For many the answer is no. In fact a recent study conducted at UCLA showed that short term dieting (up to about 6 months) can be achieved, but 2/3's of all dieters regain the weight within 4 - 5 years. The reason that these diets ultimately fail is that the underlying causes of overeating aren't usually addressed. The focus is all on counting calories, restricting fats, cutting out carbs, not eating after 7pm, or other such tactics. Take a look at the reasons why you overeat...is it what you turn to when under stress? do you refrain from expressing your feelings, stuffing them down with french fries and milkshakes instead? Examine these questions, too...how do I eat? fast or slow? alone or with others? am I persuaded by advertisements to eat something? if someone offers me something to eat that I don't really want, do I eat it anyway to avoid hurting their feelings? Dieting is expensive. In fact, Forbes.com in 2005 reported the following: "Last year Americans spent an estimated $46 billion on diet products and self-help books....a government review found that two-thirds of U.S. dieters regained all the weight they had lost within a year, and 97% had gained it all back within five years." Pretty depressing. But there's more! Ten of the most popular diets were examined to see how much a dieter spent on their weekly food to follow one of these diets. Here's how they compare: Jenny Craig.............$137.65
NutriSystem..............113.52
Atkins.......................100.52
Weight Watchers........96.64
Zone...........................92.84
Ornish.........................78.74
South Beach................78.61
Slim Fast.....................77.73
Sugar Busters!............69.62
Subway.......................68.60 Pretty amazing, huh? Granted, dealing with the root issues may take longer, but you'll be much farther ahead (and both your pocketbook and your body will be lighter, too) if you do. Tips To Getting Sponsored For Fishing Tournaments

By Scott Rauber One of the most important steps in getting sponsored to fish tournaments (whether you fish for bass, walleye, crappie, musky, redfish, marlin, etc.) is to focus on what YOU CAN DO for your sponsor not what your sponsor can do for you. When trying to obtain sponsorship from a company, first make a list of the things you could provide for your sponsor. Put yourself in the potential sponsors shoes. Does he want to give you money so you can fish? More than likely he or she doesnt want to do that. No matter what type of business you are contacting for sponsorship, they want to know whats in it for me! In other words, WHAT WILL YOU DO FOR ME? To answer that question, pretend you were in your senior year in high school and your senior paper had to be written on: TEN WAYS TO PROMOTE A POTENTIAL SPONSOR. If that were the case you would do all the research possible to find 10 ways to do it and then write your paper. Do the same thing when preparing to contact YOUR potential sponsors. When you approach them with your 7, 8, or 10 ways YOU WILL promote them; youre answering their question WHAT WILL YOU DO FOR ME? Remember that the next time you approach a potential sponsor and youll dramatically increase your chances of getting sponsored to fish tournaments. Bass Wishes Scott Rauber

Loans and Credit Cards - and Bankruptcy

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Michael_Challiner]Michael Challiner Not so very long ago the moral climate in this country was very different. People had more time for each other, and more time to examine and compare their own moral standards with others. One of the many results of this was an almost unspoken pride in making your own way through life without looking for handouts from the state or elsewhere. This resulted in a high degree of poverty in the working classes and the unemployed with their determination to be in debt to no one, but also a resolve in the so-called middle and upper classes to avoid financial embarrassment. The lowest point of this loss of face was a declaration of bankruptcy the shame which this carried with it is difficult to comprehend nowadays, but it was very real then. People lived (often very precariously) within their means and a failed business venture was a usual reason for total loss of credit. Credit even that word has undergone a subtle change of meaning. It used to be a means for businessmen to raise funds for expansion or a new venture, and was a word with very limited use outside the business world. Nowadays credit is more often taken to mean the opportunities for individuals to spend more than they earn and to live beyond their means, with a concomitant increase in the numbers declaring bankruptcy. This situation however seems to have lost its aura of shame, and instead has become, whilst not quite a badge of pride, at least an apparently easy way out of a crisis of ones own making. In 2005 there were almost 70,000 individuals declared bankrupt in England and Wales; the trend would seem to indicate that the figure for 2006 will exceed 100,000. This has resulted in an explosion in bad debts to a current average in the UK of over 3000 per person a staggering total of over 190 billion. High street banks report that they are being particularly hard hit. Why so many? There are two major factors involved the availability and the variety. Credit is now very readily obtained, with some financial institutions positively anxious to lend sums of money which are at best loosely related to the borrowers income. The increased variety is provided in the form of debit and credit cards, mortgages, unsecured loans and schemes such as consolidation agreements. A further problem is the refusal by many people to see the problems they are facing and to deal with them whilst there is yet time. They tend to close their eyes and hope it will all work out, which to some extent it does by a declaration of bankruptcy! This can result in loss of their home and most of their possessions and, doubtless in many cases, the break up of their family. One improvement for bankrupts is in the increased cost of housing which can mean that they have sufficient assets to pay their debts but do not necessarily have to sell the property, despite their lack of available funds. Does the problem start in schools? Not because pupils are going bankrupt, but because proper education in financial matters is virtually non-existent. This really would be useful education learning about the costs of credit, how to use credit cards responsibly, how to say no to that unrepeatable bargain, how to operate a bank account etc. All of which would be remarkably useful information in the credit crazy 21st century. In addition, people need to know the cost of loss of control over their financial affairs. That administrators will take control of all their financial decision making, and that there could be criminal charges for irregularities. That restrictions on their actions can continue for up to 15 years after discharge. Perhaps most telling, the information that an administrator will for their services, take a 15% levy on all income received by the bankrupt person. This at the time when for the bankrupt every penny will count as never before. Bankruptcy Restriction Orders are likely to be served on around 10% of bankrupts who are deemed to have been reckless in their move into debt, and are to be made very much aware that the condition is self-inflicted. A restriction order operates for up to 15 years, and prevents trading under a different name or acting as a company director, and makes credit virtually unobtainable. How to Select the Right Wedding Dress for Your Body Shape

By Michelle O'Connor There are millions of wedding dresses from which to choose. How do you choose the dress that will fit your unique body shape best? The first step in finding the right dress for you is to determine what body shape you have. This is your special day, and your dress should fit your body style perfectly. Here are some tips that will help you in your quest to find the perfect dress. Hourglass Figure
For women that have an hourglass shape, a strapless or off-the-shoulder gown is just right. When shopping for a strapless gown, lean towards the one-piece gowns instead of two-piece gowns. A two-piece gown can result in a choppy look, splitting you into to figures. Bias-cut and straight designs are not best for hourglass figures. They will usually pull the eye to areas of the body that you want to minimize. These types of dresses are better suited for tall women. The bride with an hourglass shape will want to accentuate her curves. Avoid heavily beaded dresses that can tend to make the bride appear heavier. Pear-Shaped Figure
A woman with a pear shaped figure has smaller shoulders and upper body than lower body. A pear shaped bride should wear shoulder pads or puffy sleeves. This bride should avoid any type of body hugging gown, full skirts, or cuts that make the upper body appear even smaller or the lower body larger. Short and Petite Figure
There are many options for the short and petite figure. Shoestring straps and off-the-shoulder gowns will work the best. A Cinderella gown will look beautiful and will add a touch of romance. Straight gowns tend to not look as nice on a short and petite figure. If you have already fallen in love with a straight wedding gown, offset it with a full veil. Wearing the right designer wedding shoes can also add height if a petite bride would like to appear taller. Keep in mind, however, that you may not want to be in high heels all night. Switching shoes will affect the way your dress hits the floor, keep that in mind when selecting your gown. Square Figure
The ideal gown for a bride with a square shape will create curves, or, create the illusion of curves.
The neckline of the dress should be beaded. Alternatively, the upper part of the bodice should be beaded. Bigger skirts and sleeves are also ways to add curves. The square figured bride should avoid sheath or clingy dresses that contribute nothing to creating the illusion of curves. More Dress Hunting Tips
Finding the perfect gown can be frustrating if you do not know what you are looking for or what type of gown will work best for your unique body shape. Never give in and settle for a dress just because you are tired of looking. There are millions of dresses out there and one of them is the perfect one for you. If you have found three or four dresses that you like certain aspects or designs of, consider having your wedding gown made for you. This way, you will be 100% satisfied with the dress and feel great! A custom made wedding dress is truly a family heirloom. Be sure to do your research at local gown stores and try on as many dresses as you like. Eventually you will begin to see a trend in the type of dresses that you like. Remember that you will be in the gown all day, during the ceremony and through the reception, dancing, greeting guests, etc. Make sure that you are comfortable and feel beautiful in your gown. This is the most important factor of buying the dress. Do not buy a dress because you think everyone else will like it. This is your day and it is all about you. Remember that when selecting your gown. Article By Michelle O'Connor, Discount Wedding Dresses Designer Wedding Shoes Wedding Packages May reproduce only if credit links remain intact.

The Date Begins: 10 Good Tips for You

By Alex Carter 1. He or She is on time and in a good frame of mind to begin the date and enjoy what could either be something magical or something ordinary. No good date ever begins late because of the tension and stress that is already built up, don't make it fester. 2. The first person begins by asking a question and the second person responds while, get this, the first person actually listens! You may not have this in your mind as the date begins, but it will make a positive first impression if you listen right away. 3. One good way to begin a date is by meeting at the restaurant or other venue where you agreed and having a drink in hand (not alcoholic). This way the date begins with you having something normal going on and you won't have nervous hands or a nervous body. 4. While the date begins with some talking and exchanging stories, one person isn't dominating the conversation too much. You must have a balance and both people must be getting something out of the date as the date begins. 5. One bad way the date begins is if you or your date berates or is rude to a waiter or employee of the place that the date begins. This impresses nobody and puts most people in a foul mood that is nearly impossible to overcome. 6. A good way the date begins is by having conversation going, a bad way that the date begins is a conversation about your or their ex-lovers. Don't talk about them throughout the date if possible, but certainly not at the beginning of the date. 7. A good date begins with good, positive energy that makes both people comfortable, something like good music on the radio or something funny right off the bat. Don't begin with tremendous periods of awkward silence, that will only make the night seem long and painful! 8. As the date begins, don't light a cigarette right away or go straight for the alcohol, not everybody likes these habits and you don't want to turn them off right away. Drinking is fine and even chewing gum is okay to relax, but don't do these nasty habits. 9. A good date does NOT begin with you throwing out ridiculous opinions on ridiculous matters that either nobody cares about or everybody cares about. Don't open the date by saying, "What were they thinking with that abortion bill? I mean come on!" Either way, you probably won't get off on solid ground. 10. Finally, as the date begins, don't be the guy that starts it with a rousing, ridiculous lie that you will never be able to back up! Never lie about status, money, education, etc. You will be found out and you will lose trust and respect that may never be recovered. How To Compare Home Loans

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Gary_Gresham]Gary Gresham When you decide to compare home loans, it can often be a confusing process. With numerous places to get a mortgage, how do you even know where to start? To compare home loans, most everyone searches for the best mortgage interest rate. Every day mortgage companies get calls from people asking what the mortgage interest rate is. The problem is, that is not a very good way to compare home loans. Not only do rates change frequently, unless you are locked into an interest rate, it means nothing. Even though your interest rate is important, that is only one part of the package. Several loan officers will gladly give you quotes over the phone but they really are not doing you any favors if they do. What you really need to know is, are you getting the right kind of mortgage for your particular situation? Here are a few considerations beyond getting the best mortgage interest rate when you are ready to compare home loans. How long are you going to live in your home? Long term loans, like 30 year fixed loans, have interest rates that won't change for thirty years. A lot can happen in that time so the lender has a high risk and these loans usually have a higher mortgage interest rate because you are buying long term security. But what if you are the type that moves every five years? Now, the lender only has to guarantee the interest rate for five years so the risk is lower and generally the interest rate is too. With the average person changing homes every five to seven years, paying for this long term security may be a waste of money. Generally, if you believe that you will be in the home for more than 7 years, then a 30 year home loan makes sense. But any less and you should consider a short term fixed loan with lower monthly payments. If you want to compare home loans from different lenders, ask them for a good faith estimate form that lists all mortgage closing costs. Whether you are getting purchase loans or refinancing mortgage loans, a good faith estimate form is produced for both. The good faith estimate form lists all of the estimated mortgage closing costs and the form shows what the lender fees and escrow fees from each lender are. One lender may be offering you the best mortgage interest rate, but if his lender fees are much higher than the other lender, is it really a better deal for you? You'll be able to quickly figure out which is a better deal once you look at both good faith estimate forms. If a lender won't give you this form, consider it a red flag because they are obviously trying to hide something. Also, make sure you understand how your loan works. With the new hybrid ARM's coming out, even loan officers can become confused and offer you the wrong information. There should never be surprises in a mortgage loan because surprises usually cost you a lot more money that you expected. Ask a lot of questions if you are unsure of anything and get solid answers from your mortgage broker or loan officer before you sign your paperwork. Remember, you are responsible for the loan once you sign the paperwork no matter what you were told. These are just a couple of more things to consider other than just getting the best mortgage interest rate when you are ready to compare home loans. Someone that is offering you the right home loan should determine how it fits into your particular situation. It's always good to know all of your options so you can compare home loans the right way and end up with the best possible mortgage loan for you. High Response Marketing With Low-Cost Postcards

By Bob Leduc Postcards can drive a huge amount of traffic to your web site, generate a flood of new sales leads or produce a surge in any business activity you want. And you don't have to spend a lot of time or money on them ...if you apply these four little-known postcard marketing secrets. Postcard Marketing Secret #1: Keep Your Message Very Brief Don't try to close sales with postcards. You don't have enough space to provide all the information needed to close sales. Instead, briefly state the major benefit(s) you offer to attract the reader's attention. Then focus on motivating them to get more detailed information from a source where you can close sales. For example, send them to your web site or give them a phone number to call. Postcard Marketing Secret #2: Design Your Postcard To Look Like A Message From A Friend. Most postcards I see look like an ad in a magazine. But when a postcard looks like advertising, people react to it as advertising. They don't pay much attention to it. Instead, set up your postcard to look like a brief personal message from a friend. This attracts attention and lures prospects into reading your postcard ...even though they realize it is advertising. It generates a lot more replies than postcards that look like an ad. Postcard Marketing Secret #3: Don't Spend a Lot on Printing Postcards that look like a personal message can be very inexpensive to print. For example, here are 2 ways you can do the job on any computer with a printer: * Print postcards on plain (no printed lines) 4 x 6 inch index cards. Cost: about 1.5 cents per card. * Print 4 postcards at a time on 8 1/2 x 11 inch sheets of standard index card stock. Then cut the sheets into quarters. Each postcard will be 4 1/4 inches high by 5 1/2 inches wide. Cost: about 1 cent per card. Tip: In the US you can send postcards by First Class Mail for 23 cents if you make them at least 3 1/2 inches high by 5 inches wide but not over 4 1/4 inches high by 6 inches wide. Postcard Marketing Secret #4: Don't Underestimate the Importance of Your Mailing List You can generate a high percentage of replies by sending your postcards to prospects likely to be interested in your offer AND who have a proven record of taking action on offers that interest them. This is why postcards produce a big response when you send them to your existing customers. But how can you find new prospects with these same 2 characteristics? Here are 2 ways: 1. Rent the customer lists of companies that are not your competitors, but who sell their products or services to the same targeted market. 2. Rent the paid subscriber lists of magazines and newsletters read by prospects in your targeted market. You can get both lists through most mailing list brokers. The next time you want to generate a flood of traffic to your web site or a flood of new sales leads ...send postcards. Apply these four little-known postcard marketing secrets and you'll produce a big response without spending a lot of time or money. The Secret About Fashion And You - Why Buy New When The Old Will Do

By Kacy Carr What does the word trendy mean in relation to fashion? Well simply answered, trendy means more up to date with what clothes/Jewelry you wear, more so than that of the person who chooses to snub in adorning themselves in latest fashion gear. In a nutshell: if dressed from head to toe in new designs from Paris, Italy or London along with jewellery pieces of recent design - then you may be referred to by an onlooker as being trendy. However, keeping up with what is in fashion can leave you penniless because, most trendy designer labels come with a price tag that a fashion manic can ill afford. However, it is the uncontrollable urge to have those trendy clothes that hang on a boutique rail in the high street - that has you "the consumer" ignoring the warning signs of going overdrawn with your bank. To overcome this and still have money in your pocket is to set your own trend or style. Become a trend setter in your own right. Personalize those outfits hanging in the wardrobe collecting dust. Why buy new when the old will do. Think about it e.g. if you have garments hanging in the closet after a lengthy period of time is enough to tell you, that you are still attached to that little number (dress or frock).
If you feel the garment is past its sell by date (stale) then refresh it. (Wash or dry clean). Clothing is easily altered to appear fashionable and trendy Colour coded material and accessories is, the key to what fashion is all about, but more importantly "you", meaning: if you dislike the new updates on style, don`t wear them. Remember no one is out to pass judgement on the clothes you wear, however in saying that, if you follow designer fashion traits which do not compliment your shape or size then you may be faced with the possibility on being judged for looking hideous. (Fashion Freak) Remember in the world of fashion "What goes around comes around" For example: your clothes hanging in the cupboard were once trendy garments bearing a designer label at the time of purchase, so more the reason to take advantage - before repeat designs from the 1960s are created for the twentieth century at a price you can ill afford. Make the shawl trendy and fashionable. A shawl/shoulder wrap can liven up a plain sleeveless dress secured with a brooch/ornamental jewellery pin. Elbow draped shawls can be kept in place over the arms with bangles or bracelets. Concentrate on the shawl - and to where the jewellery clasp is to rest. (Nape of the neck - on the shoulder or clipped at the front) Personal preference prevails here. Two shawls (of light material) interwoven together in different shades is fashionable and trendy. You can always remove one shoulder wrap leaving you with what would appear to onlookers or admirers as another outfit. .Carry extra pieces of Jewelry in your handbag to claim yet another image. Be creative in thought, creativity results in trendy fashion gear. Make sure to jot down your ideas and conjure up images in your head and work from there. Low cut dresses can be smartened up with trendy fashionable neck decorations, i.e. shoe laces which come in different colours size and length, tie them in thin bows - plait them or even thread beads or pearls onto them. You can match the neckwear you have designed with wrist/ankle tie ups. This is more cost affective than buying expensive ribbons or chokers. The true feminine look in trendy fashion gear is the presence of head wear (Millinery hats). Save money: remove a shoulder pad from an old dress or jacket and cover in material of your choosing. Lace is a fine choice. Weave pearls, beads or buttons in and out of the lace or loop them around the edge. Sequins work well to. Have the lace cover the eyes or scrunch/fold it up on top of the padding. Take your time and you will be surprised at the result. Secure with hair grips. Regardless of what you wear, whether it is new trendy fashion gear or not, your own choice will leave you feeling like a million dollars. Fashion is about you; remember those famous words "It suits the wearer not the starer". Now go out and knock them dead with your very own trend and let them stare all they want. Stress and Depression - Is Medication the Best Solution?

By Abe Kass There is relief for people suffering from depression and anxiety, a very painful and debilitating condition. Frequently present or past circumstantial stress causes these illnesses. By examining one's relationships, attitudes and life style, depression and anxiety can be kept in check and for many, completely eliminated. The guidance of a mental health professional is often necessary. Genetic differences and learned behavior influence how people respond to stress. These differences between people account for why some people become depressed under severe stress and others don't. Stress is so powerful that it can actually change the physical body and even alter its chemical balance. People respond to stress, at least in the early stages, by trying to avoid it. This is often why people become alcoholics, rage-a-holics, workaholics and hypochondriacs. Unfortunately, these attempted solutions rarely work and often because of their destructive nature they make things far worse. Depression sets in when people give-up trying to fight the stress. By dealing with the problem head-on and intelligently, most people can learn to tame their demons and discover a truly satisfying and happy life. Anxiety, depression and similar ailments are nothing new. They have been around as long as humankind. This is because stress and depression are a normal part of human nature. It is natural to feel sad or anxious when things go wrong. It can actually be a blessing in disguise. Consider the following analogies: It is essential to survival that our skin can sense heat and let us know to keep our hand, for example, out of fire. The mild discomfort of rapidly warming fingers is a very appropriate and useful warning - "move away, you are too close and you could get burnt and severely damage yourself." Our feelings of depression and/or anxiety are similar. Depression and anxiety tells us that something is wrong and a significant change is needed. If you are driving down the highway and the temperature gauge announces that the engine is over-heating, what do you do? Does it make sense to reach under the dash board and disconnect the gauge or pull over, see whats wrong with the engine and come up with a plan to fix it? The obvious answer is to fix the overheating problem before the entire engine is ruined. Yet many people will try to solve their anxiety or depression by eliminating the sensors through adapting a dangerous or dysfunctional life style or by relying exclusively on psychiatric medication to solve the problem. A man in his mid twenties came to me for psychotherapy. Both his family doctor and a psychiatrist had diagnosed him as being severely depressed. They started him off on antidepressant medication to eases his discomfort. He was sad, tearful and extremely depressed. He reported that he had no idea why this was happening. He had been married a few years. Recently his wife had given birth to their first child. Immediately afterwards he became depressed.
Together we figured out that what was bothering him was his becoming a father. We began to explore the relationship he had with his father and how his own father raised him. He realized that he had patterned and compared himself to his father his entire life. When he paid me at the end of the session, he commented that his signature on his cheque is an exact imitation of the way his father signed. After the first few sessions, when he understood where his depression was coming from and that his feelings were normal and natural, he immediately felt relieved and better. When he went for his follow-up session with his psychiatrist, he presented himself as being so much calmer and confident that the doctor discontinued the medication. The medication took two to four weeks to create an effect and after just one week, with psychotherapy he felt much better. This young man continued to see me for another nine months. His father, who was a successful politician, took on a less idealized form in his mind. The son began to see his father as human, with virtues and faults. Not only was he a successful professional, wealthy and powerful, but he was also an alcoholic who cheated on his wife. As time went on my client developed more and more of his own sense of self. He became his own person and no longer compared himself to his father. This was very liberating for him. When we finally finished our work he was completely free from depression and reported he had never felt better in his entire life. With courage and a willingness to face the issues honestly in one's life, in most cases debilitating stress and depression can be completely eliminated Abe Kass, M.A., R.S.W., R.M.F.T., is the publisher of Wisdom Scientific self-help educational programs. Abe is also a registered Social Worker, registered Marriage and Family Therapist, certified hypnotherapist and award winning educator. He concluded, after many years of clinical practice and research, that practical solutions requiring a focussed effort of no more than a few minutes a day for very specific personal and relationship problem were critically needed. Why Market to Generation X?

By Bill Willard Generation X"--the 40 million or so people born between 1965 and 1976--understands it is living in a world of uncertainty where neither the government nor private employers offer lifetime financial security. This is, however, the next generation of responsible adults, bright young people with families to protect and educate...and nearly 40 years until retirement. Generation X was the backbone of Operation Iraqi Freedom and continues serving the US effort to bring peace to the Middle East. None had to be there. They chose to be there by becoming Marines, soldiers, sailors, airmen or Coast Guardsmen. For example, our son, Bill, 32, was finishing a four-year Marine Corps enlistment when September 11 changed his life plan. Completing Officer Candidate School and The Basic School would mean another four-year commitmentbut one he gladly made. After receiving his commission, Bill was assigned to Okinawa, and recently returned from an 8-month deployment to Iraq. So don't mistake Gen-Xers for Baby Boomers. Generation X detests labels--including the Gen-X tag its had to live with--and unlike their Boomer parents, has no illusions about the future. Gen-Xers are... Less status-conscious than their parents, Gen-Xers are not into show, they want results. Many Xers no longer view college as the only way to prepare for vocations leading to rewarding careers. These sharp young people are becoming a significant economic and social force. Boldly putting their own stamp on business. Launching hi-tech and other types of companies at a record clip, Gen-Xers are less tied down by old notions of bureaucracy, and they're ready to try out their own management styles. Yet, they view financial prosperity as a by-product of a well-rounded life, not the main event. Risk-takers. Surveys find adversity, challenges, and the high risk of failure, far from discouraging Gen-Xers, have produced a tough, even ruthless edge. Resilience, the willingness to abandon a losing project and try again, is fundamental. Motivated to make a difference. Gen-Xers are attracted to careers that compel interest and provide the challenge of competition. Thirty years ago, Peter Drucker in The Effective Executive, wrote: "Doing the right thing is more important than doing things right." Judging by the wave of successful Whiz Kids with neither formal business education nor conventional management training, Drucker's message resonates. Interested in good personal relationships. Embracing racial and cultural diversity more genuinely and less self-consciously than any generation before them, Xers are also more likely to be tuned-in to personal relationships and do business with someone they like and believe to be competent than with someone claiming to be an "expert." Delaying marriage and starting families. Maybe it's because they've seen so many Boomers end up in divorce court, the so-called challenge of being single in a couples-oriented world no longer squares with the demographics. As a result, Xers also are: More stable when they do marry, Xers are about nesting and making a house a home. Today's newlyweds are typically more mature, well-established and have higher incomes than in the past. Better savers than their Boomer parents. In this they are more like their grandparents. The average Gen-X Moms and Dads start putting money away for college when their kids are 2, while most Boomers waited until theirs were 7. Rediscovering traditional family values. Appalled by the moral relativism and situational ethics of their parents' generation--the Clintons were the last straw for many young Americans (Al Gore and John Kerry amusing poseurs) Xers similarly don't buy the notion that the government-as-nanny-state knows best. Their message: It doesn't take a village, stupid, it takes parents! Redefining the family-career challenge. Boomer women may have opened the door to the workplace, but their daughters are facing the family-career challenge in their own ways. I have talked to women of all ages about balancing work and family life. What has surprised me the most is the difference in outlook between women my age, 27, and women just 10 years older, says Elizabeth McGuire, a graduate student at John Hopkins School of International Studies: But most women I know who are in their 20s are dissatisfied with [family-career] alternatives. Concerned about infertility, many of us want to have children while were young. And though many of the dual-career couples I know who have nannies are wonderful parents and have successful careers, it seems their relationships with each other have suffered. While others debate whether day care is harmful to children, we are more worried about avoiding the frenetic pace these families seem to keep. In a word: Gen-Xers are unique. They don't do things or look at the world the way their parents did, and they have to be approached and worked with accordingly. What This Means To You Marketing and selling to Generation X is a work in progress. That means you can take what you do best and creatively wing it based on what you know about this unique marketplace. Declares motivational speaker and author, Sue A. Do Scents Really Make Sense?

By G. Wayne Byrd With over a hundred brands of formulas, gels, lotions, sprays, cremes, gravies and so-called Fish Attractants on the market, whether or not to scent your lures can be a very perplexing topic. The first age old question I usually get isDo scents or attractants really work? The answer isYes, they do! Now, with that being said, lets break this topic down a bit and discuss how and why they work so that you can better understand the mechanics. You might even discover that they work in an entirely different way than you thought they would. You woke up this morning and the weather outside was beautiful so you decided to go fishing. You rummage around the kitchen for a while and put together a quick breakfast, eat, grab your gear and you are out the door. Did you wash your hands yet this morning? You probably sweated and scratched yourself during the night and why would you take a shower at 5am just to go fishing. The omelet you made contained cheese, eggs, ham, onions and hot sauce--all of which you handled. You get into your vehicle and head to your favorite fishin hole. All of a sudden, you realize you forgot to get gas yesterday and might not have enough to make it back home after the fishing, so you stop and fill the tank up. As usual, the gas splatters on your hands and you get petroleum products all over your hands from the gas nozzle, but you just wipe them on your pants and go on about your business. Perhaps you light up a cigarette or take a chew on the way to your favorite destination as well.

You are now standing on the shore of the lake, trying to figure out which lure is going to haul the hawg in today. One pole has a 5" watermelon colored plastic worm that usually produces a few fish. You know the worm Im talking about--its the one thats been hanging from your pole in the garage ever since your last fishing trip a few weeks ago. Its the same one that got dragged all the way down the driveway this morning because you were trying to carry to much stuff all at once. The other pole just has line hanging on it because you had to break it off last time you went fishing. You go through the tackle box and find a nice crankbait to tie on. Of course, you rub it around in your hands for a while and it takes about 2 minutes to get it attached to the line because you missed the loop when you brought the tag end back around.twice! Finally, you fished for 6 hours and told everyone you didnt understand why the fishing was so slow today! The Science behind the Scent First things first I will use bass as an example because that is the species I primarily fish for and have studied for years. A bass has a very small brain in comparison to the human brain; the fish isn't dumb, but it's not smart either by the human definition. It has three purposes in its lifecycle--eating, surviving, and reproducing. Bass simply interpret environmental stimuli, and then react to it. They are territorial by nature, but also very alert to changes in their environment. This same creature is also capable of conditioned behavioral responses. Dr. Loren Hill studied and documented conditioned behavior in bass while he was doing studies for the development of the Color-C-Lector. Bass are undoubtedly very complex creatures. Reactions to any environmental stimuli including artificial lures can be directly related to three senses. These senses are mechanoreception (the use of their lateral line, hearing, and touch senses), photoreception (their use of vision), and chemoreception (use of their senses of smell and taste). Biologically speaking, chemoreception is further broken down into two categories: olfaction (sense of smell), and gustation (sense of taste). Can bass smell different odors? Yes, they can, as do other species of fish. Bass however, don't depend on scent as a major factor in foraging. Sight and sound seem to be much more important. Compared to some of the super-smellers like catfish, salmon, or carp, a bass's sense of smell is a great deal less sensitive. Nevertheless, I can't ignore the capability they do have. Let's analyze the subject matter of fish olfaction (their sense of smell). Bass have two nostrils on each side of their snout. One is the anterior nostril and the other one is the posterior nostril. Water will flow into the anterior nostril, over the olfactory nerves, and back out through the posterior nostril. There is no link between these sets of nostrils and their throat. As the water flows across the olfactory nerves, a message is sent to the brain, where the scent is then interpreted as either a positive or a negative scent. As fish mature, their senses of smell and taste become even more sensitive. Fish use their sense of smell in many different ways: to locate spawning areas, feeding areas, predator awareness, and even their schoolmates in open water. Positive Scent vs. Negative Scent Have you ever been catching schooling fish, then have one hooked deep enough that it was bleeding when you released it? Most often in this case, the school probably stopped feeding shortly after you released the fish. Do you know why the frenzied fish stopped? The schoolmate released a chemical known as schreckstoffen. Schreckstoffen is sensed by the other fish in the school through chemoreception and interpreted as a negative scent by the brain. The scents that we purchase to help us catch that hawg" have ingredients that are interpreted as a positive scent. I dont know of a single body of water in Colorado that has a growth of garlic or anise under the waters surface. Just like we, as humans, like to spice our food with salt and pepper because they are appealing to us, fish enjoy spices such as garlic, anise and salt as well as a multitude of other spices. Take a handful of unsalted peanuts and pop them into your mouth. They are not nearly as good as the salted ones and you might even spit them out. Imagine a bass swimming up to a sinking unsalted soft plastic worm, he takes a small taste and does not taste it again. Take the same type of worm and impregnate it with salt, the fish swims up to taste it, he then locks down on the worm and wont let go. If the worm were also coated with a scent, the fish probably would have been more aggressive in taking the bait earlier. Scents such as garlic and anise have another great purpose as well. The purpose is to mask the smell of offensive odors, kind of like the odor on your hands that you rubbed all over your lures this morning. First, let me explain the importance of "Fish Attractant". A bass (Largemouth, Smallmouth, or Spotted) will usually spit out bait within two or three seconds if the bass doesnt accept the taste (if it picks up the bait at all). On the other side of the coin, if a bass likes the scent or attractant, it can hold the bait up to as much as thirty seconds or more before it spits the bait out. Fish Attractant does not really "attract" fish, but your odds on setting the hook will be greater by using it rather than not. Spending Your Cents on Scents Now, let's talk about marketing. The companies that manufacture Fish Attractants or Scents want the anglers to "Use it by dousing the bait with it." Well, if you have lots of money, go right ahead! Most tackle shops that I've been to have a variety of Attractants and Scents, and they cost the angler anywhere from $1.99 up to $10.00, and when an angler "Douses the Bait" several times, he or she is ready for another bottle, and that can get expensive after awhile. Most plastic baits on the market today are manufactured with a "Scent" already put in the bait. Why would you want to douse this same bait with additional Fish Attractant? It really makes no sense at all, does it? However, there is a reason why one would want to buy and use Fish Attractant. Just think of this...a bass can sense 1-200th of a drop of a substance in about 100 gallons of water. Wow, what an acute sense of taste! This just goes to say that whenever you go fishing in the morning, "Gas-Up" the night before and wash your hands. Some of the most popular scents on the market today are
Berkley, Bang, MegaStrike, Crave, Kickn Bass, Liquid Lure, Mr. Goop, Dr. Juice, Fish Formula, Scientific Bass Products and a host of others. My scent of choice is by Basswax. Its in a big tube like Chap Stick and has a beeswax base so it stays on the lure or plastic worm for a long time. The stick is available in garlic, crawdad, sardine and salty shad. It will not drip, leak or spill and get all over your boat carpet or inside your tackle box. Scent can make a small difference in the numbers of fish you catch under certain conditions, but remember it will never completely make or break your day of fishing! http://www.fishinsecrets.com Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=G._Wayne_Byrd http://EzineArticles.com/?Do-Scents-Really-Make-Sense?&id=238055 where to order phentermine

Beating Homework Horrors Forever

By Michael Grose Homework causes more headaches for parents than it does for children. Some parents worry because their children dont seem to do enough while others are concerned because they do too much. But for many parents homework is that time of the day when they routinely harass, hassle and harangue their child to JUST DO YOUR HOMEWORK! Okay, what to do? The first step is to know the homework policy of your childrens school and understand what is expected of you as a parent. Most schools have parent interviews and information sessions at the start of the new year so make sure next year you get a good handle on how your childrens teacher expects you to assist your child. It is also useful to find out what your childrens teacher will do if your child doesnt complete set tasks. Homework is basically an agreement between a teacher and a child so it should be up to the teacher to ensure the homework is completed. That means the teacher becomes the bad guy and puts some consequence in place if the homework is not completed. Your role as a parent is to support the school if a consequence is put in place, such as missing some recess to complete or whatever. Parents need to be mindful that it is hard for teachers these days as they dont have too many options available to ensure children complete homework. Here are 10 tips to help you handle homework in a relatively sane way: 1. Establish homework time and stick to it each day. If children tell you that they dont have any formal homework then they can read, revise or organise their work. My feedback tells me that sticking to a routine despite the fact that no formal homework is set extremely useful and helps avoid battles. 2. Put the onus back on your children to take responsibility for their work. Ask children at the start of a homework session to state how much homework they will do. At the end of the session check it to see if it matches with their intentions as well as yours. If you are more concerned about homework than them then it is you not your children who is responsible for homework. 3. Homework is as much a time management issue as anything else. Encourage students to work reasonably quickly and efficiently. Have a set time limit, which they should stick to. There is generally little point slogging away once they become frustrated or tired. Give them an egg-timer or use a clock and get them to work hard for small chunks of time. A little work each night is more productive than packing it into one weekly session. 4. Help children decide the best time to do homework and then encourage them to stick to those times. Maybe on some days homework is tackled after dinner for any number of reasons. If having homework done straight adter school is important to you then consider feeding children ONLY after homework is completed. Food can be a huge motivator for some children!!! (As mentioned in point 1 it is important that there is a homework routine, but the timing can vary.) 5. Establish a good working environment for students. Make sure they have a quiet area away from distractions that is well lit and with good ventilation. A table or desk makes a good workspace, although dont be surprised if they spread work out all over the kitchen table. Some kids hate to be stuck away in their rooms and prefer to work at the kitchen table and can do so productively. Others are easily distracted and work in short bursts. Work out what is best for YOUR child. 6. Use the motivating research tool of the 21st Century - the Internet. It is quick, convenient and gives access to huge amounts of information. Nevertheless, children should still know how to access information from more traditional means such as books. Check with your childs teacher as to their specific recommendations and preferences. 7. Encourage children to get organised by thinking ahead and planning their homework around their extra-curricular activities. A weekly planner or diary will help older students get organised. Assisting children to become organised is perhaps the best way parents can help at home. 8. If you are helping a child with a particular task, keep your explanation as simple and practical as you can. If you become upset or frustrated and the atmosphere becomes tense then stop helping. 9. Be realistic and dont expect to solve all homework difficulties. When in doubt send a note to your childs teacher letting him or her know the problem. The teacher will appreciate this good communication. 10. If you have concerns about the how much homework your child is set or the level of difficulty of homework contact the teacher and arrange a time to discuss your worries. Such discussion is the basis of true partnership between you and your childs teacher. Homework hassles have always been around and always will be. The place of homework is routinely questioned by education authorities (now is currently one of those times in Australia) but my gut reaction is that children will always have homework. The name may change and the activities may vary but it will always be homework. I urge schools to make sure homework is varied, interesting, engaging and purposeful for children and parents. Parents also need to be patient with both children (if they struggle) and schools that are trying to find a balance between too little and too much in these busy times. Mind Body & Spirit Therapies

By Zoe Delikan There is no question that having a massage makes you feel great. Massage can relieve stress, help you recover from physical activity or injury and even reduce stress and anxiety, but a question that many women ask is:
Can it help you to achieve your weight loss goals? Research has shown that massage can have a positive effect on your muscle-building capabilities and fitness levels, which in turn increases your capacity to control or lose weight. Healthy strong muscles burn calories and make it easier for you to participate in all sorts of sports and activities that can help you burn extra calories and improve your overall fitness and wellbeing. Massage has the following benefits that can directly influence your ability to control or loose weight: 1. Massage has been shown to improve circulation therefore improving the supply of nutrition to the muscles. Massage maximizes the supply of these nutrients and oxygen through an increase in blood flow, which helps the muscles to grow and burn more calories as a result. 2.Massage improves your muscles flexibility which can help reduce the danger of experiencing injuries during exercise which can limit activity, exercise and weight loss progress. 3.Massage helps rid the muscles of waste products such as lactic acid build up in muscles during and after exercise. If you havent had a massage lately, what are you waiting for? Find a trained massage therapist and make yourself a booking. Zoe Delikan - Massage Therapist practising in Hertfordshire, England

Anniversary Gifts - Thirty-Seventh Anniversary

By Michael Russell This year's anniversary gift offering is a little on the unusual side. Every once in a while, the list makers for these anniversaries throw us a bit of a curve. Well, this is one of those years. Hold on to your hats and your seats because this year you're going to be searching for anniversary gifts made from alabaster. If you guys are right now sitting there mumbling to yourselves wondering what alabaster is (gals all know this stuff) then you might need a brief but simple explanation. Alabaster is, according to the dictionary, "a finely granular variety of gypsum, often white and translucent, used for ornamental objects or work, such as lamp bases, figurines, etc." Okay, are we clear on that now? Good. So, what exactly do you go out and get that's made of this stuff? Well, for starters, if you just want to expend enough energy to read the definition, you can pick up for your wife a nice lamp. No, the whole lamp isn't made out of alabaster. Just the base. Of course, you have to make sure that the lamp you pick out actually has a base that is made out of alabaster. Just because it is white doesn't make it so. Ask the salesman. Probably the most popular alabaster figurines are the mini angels. There are probably more of these floating around than Carter has liver pills. You can find alabaster angels praying, kneeling, flying, with Mary, with a harp, with a clock, with roses and on and on. If there is something you can put with an angel, you can bet that you'll find it. If figurines are more your speed, you might want to go to one of those novelty shops that specialize in figurines. Again, not every one is made out of alabaster. You're going to need to speak to a sales person and find out what's what. Alabaster has a certain look to it that is unmistakable. There are other things you can have made out of alabaster besides lamps and figurines. You can pick up some nice alabaster vases in a variety of shapes and sizes. The prices of these vases range from the low 20s to near $100. If you want something really unusual, you can pick up a nice Egyptian alabaster bowl. Some of these actually look like a genie may actually pop out of one. They are quite unique. The prices of these are roughly around $50. You can also get some very nice alabaster candleholders. Don't worry, they won't melt. These candle holders come in all shapes and sizes for both those long skinny candles and those big fat and short candles. The price range of these candleholders is from $30 to $40 depending mostly on the size. The number of things that are made out of alabaster are virtually unlimited. The great thing about these gifts is that they are relatively inexpensive. So what you will probably want to do is pick up a few different pieces. That way your spouse is sure to know that a lot of care and effort went into selecting her anniversary gift for this very special occasion. Michael Russell
